WhatsApp Ordering and Cash on Delivery: Selling Without a Card Gateway
Card checkout is the default assumption in ecommerce advice written for the UK and US. In Pakistan, much of the Middle East and parts of South Asia, a large share of buyers still want to talk first and pay on delivery. A store that ignores that loses the orders rather than converting them.
Why buyers choose a message over a checkout
Three reasons come up repeatedly: uncertainty about the product, reluctance to enter card details on a shop they do not know yet, and questions about delivery to their specific area. A message resolves all three in a minute.
This is not only a payments issue. It is a trust issue, and trust converts.
How WhatsApp ordering should work on the page
The order button should open WhatsApp with the message already written: product name, variant, quantity and a link back to the product. The buyer sends it without typing, and you receive a message you can act on immediately.
Put it beside the standard add to cart rather than instead of it. Buyers who are ready to pay by card should not be pushed into a conversation.
Making cash on delivery survivable
The known weakness of COD is refused deliveries. Reduce it rather than accept it:
- Confirm every order by message or call before dispatch
- State the delivery window and the exact amount due on the product page
- Charge a small advance on high value or custom items
- Keep a note of numbers that refuse repeatedly
- Use couriers that actually report attempted deliveries
Keep the record straight
Orders that arrive as messages still need to exist in the store's admin. Enter them so stock, revenue and repeat customers stay visible in one place. Otherwise the reporting you rely on is only telling you about card orders.
Adding cards later
WhatsApp and COD are a strong starting point, not a permanent replacement. Once you have consistent order volume and reviews, adding a card gateway raises average order value and lets you sell to buyers who will not wait for a reply.
Every store we build ships with WhatsApp ordering wired into the product pages, and payment gateway setup when you want cards as well. RajaKart and X Projectors both run this way, and you can open either from the work page to see it in use.
