Why Online Stores Get Visitors but No Sales

Getting visitors is the hard part, so a store with traffic and no orders is closer to working than it feels. Something specific is stopping people, and it is almost always one of six things rather than the design as a whole.

This walks through them in the order we check a client store, starting with the ones that lose the most orders for the least effort to fix.

First, check the obvious: can people actually buy?

Place a real order on your own store, on your own phone, on mobile data rather than wifi. Pay with a real card and then refund it. A surprising share of no sales problems are a broken payment key, a shipping rule that blocks every postcode, or a button that does nothing on a phone.

Do this before changing anything else. It takes ten minutes and it either finds the problem or rules it out for good.

  • Complete a full test order on a phone, on mobile data
  • Check the confirmation email actually arrives
  • Try a postcode outside your usual area
  • Test with a different card and a different browser

The traffic may be the wrong traffic

A hundred visitors who searched for the cheapest version of something you sell at a premium will never convert. Look at which searches and which pages bring people in. If most arrivals land on a blog post about a general topic and leave, the store is not broken, the intent is.

The fix is to earn visits from searches that include a product, a brand, a size or a price. Those visitors arrive ready.

Trust: what a first time buyer looks for

A stranger deciding whether to give you card details scans for signals in seconds. Missing signals do not produce a complaint, they produce a closed tab.

  • A real business name, address and phone number, easy to find
  • Reviews with names, not stars with no source
  • Clear returns policy, stated in plain language
  • Delivery cost and timescale visible before checkout
  • A padlock, a professional domain, and no template placeholder text
  • Photos that are obviously yours rather than supplier stock

Product pages that answer the buying question

Most product pages describe the item and forget the decision. A buyer wants to know whether it is right for them, when it will arrive, and what happens if it is wrong.

  • Say who the product suits, and who it does not
  • Put specifications in a table so they can be compared
  • Show delivery cost and date on the page itself
  • Answer the top three questions customers ask you directly
  • One clear buy action, above the fold on a phone

Checkout friction, in order of damage

Every extra step loses people. These are the ones that cost the most orders in practice, and all of them are settings rather than rebuilds.

  • Forced account creation before purchase
  • Delivery cost only revealed on the final step
  • Too many form fields, especially on mobile
  • Only one payment method
  • No visible progress, so the buyer cannot see how much is left

Make it easy to ask a question

In markets where buyers message before they pay, a WhatsApp button is not a fallback, it is the main channel. A hesitant buyer who can ask one question usually buys. The same buyer with no way to ask leaves.

Stores we build ship with WhatsApp ordering wired into the product pages for exactly this reason, and it is often the single change that turns a quiet store into an ordering one.

Fix in this order

Resist redesigning. Work down this list and measure after each step, because the earlier items recover more orders than anything visual.

  • Test a real order end to end and fix anything broken
  • Add delivery cost and returns policy where buyers can see them
  • Add trust details: address, phone, real reviews, real photos
  • Rewrite your top five product pages around the buying decision
  • Remove one checkout step and add a second payment method
  • Add a question route: WhatsApp, or click to call

A store with traffic and no orders is a diagnosis job, not a design job. Work the list from the top and the missing orders usually appear within the first three steps.

If you want a second pair of eyes, send your store link on WhatsApp and you will get the specific points that are costing you orders.
