How to Set Up an Online Shop in the UK: A 7 Day Launch Plan
Setting up an online shop does not take months. Deciding things takes months. If the decisions are made in advance, a small store can be built, filled and tested inside a week, and that is exactly how most of our launches run.
This is that week, laid out day by day. Follow it in order and by day seven you have a live shop that can take a real order.
Before day one: the three things that block everything else
Nothing on this plan works until these are settled, so settle them first. Every delayed launch we have seen traces back to one of the three.
- A decided product range, even if it is only five items
- Prices, including what delivery will cost you per parcel
- Who the shop is for, in one sentence you could say out loud
Day one: name, domain and trading setup
Choose the shop name and buy the matching domain the same day, in your own name so you own it permanently. Then register as a sole trader with HMRC and start the business bank account application, because both have waiting time attached.
Do not spend three days on the name. A clear, spellable name beats a clever one.
Day two: payments and delivery rules
Apply for your payment gateway now so any verification happens while the site is being built. Then decide your delivery rule and write it as one sentence, for example free UK delivery over 40 pounds, otherwise 3.95 pounds.
Check a courier's actual prices for your heaviest parcel before you fix that rule, not after.
Day three: photos and product copy
This is the day people underestimate. Shoot every product against a plain wall in daylight, from the same distance and angle, and rename the files properly. Then write a short honest description for each: what it is, who it suits, size and material, delivery time.
Consistent photos make a small shop look established more than any design choice does.
- One main photo per product, same background and framing
- Two extra angles for anything with detail
- Short description, real dimensions, real delivery expectation
Days four and five: the build
With decisions and content ready, the store itself comes together quickly: home page, product listing, product pages, cart, checkout, contact, and the policy pages your shop legally needs. Mobile comes first, because that is where most of your visitors will be.
This is also where you decide between renting a hosted platform monthly and owning a custom built store outright. We build the second kind, with the domain and hosting in your name and no monthly platform fee.
Day six: test like a customer, not like the owner
Place a real order on your own phone and follow it all the way through. Most launch problems surface in this single hour.
- Card payment completes and the money appears in the dashboard
- You receive the order notification and the customer receives a confirmation
- Delivery charge is correct for one item and for five
- Every page loads on mobile data, not just wifi
- Contact form and WhatsApp button both reach you
Day seven: go live and tell people
Publish, then do the two things that actually bring the first visitors: put the shop link in your Instagram and Facebook profiles, and message the people who already asked to buy from you. A quiet launch is the only kind that fails.
Add your shop to Google Search Console on the same day so you can see which searches start showing your pages.
The plan works because it separates decisions from building. Make the decisions in days one to three and the shop almost builds itself.
If you want the build handled inside that week, send your product list on WhatsApp and you will get a fixed price and a launch date back.
